Interesting discussions about participatory research at the POWES Conference
On 5-7 July 2023, the NEW ABC project’s UK Team presented at the Psychology of Women and Equalities Section Conference (POWES) which showcases feminist scholarship. The theme for this year’s conference was ‘Community, Care and Complaint’.
Sarah Crafter (OU) chaired a session about Participatory research, and presented a talk entitled “Gendered nuendo, racism, bullying and care: Ethical dilemmas in participatory action research and the case of the ‘Young Translators Club’”, together with the other UK members Nelli Stavropoulou (OU), Guida de Abreu and Eleni Stamou (OBU). In this presentation, the team drew on data from the ‘Empowering Young Translators’ pilot action to critically reflect on some of the incidences and ethical dilemmas faced by the research team as they attempted to maintain an ethos of empowerment and equitability whilst working with Participatory Action Research in a secondary school. The team explored the relationship between participatory work in a school context, the impact of gendered innuendo in a mixed-gendered after-school club and the role of women researchers.
