Self-expression through Poetry among secondary-school students
The NEW ABC partner ACE visited a secondary school in Mechelen in spring 2022 and ran sessions of the Self-Expression through Poetry pilot with two cohorts of students registered in OKAN (Dutch-language intensive courses for newcomers).
Through a process of co-creation, based on students’ language levels, perceptions and interests, workshops were conducted to introduce and broaden interest in poetry reading and writing through shared readings, writing prompts and discussion. Among the themes explored were feelings of belonging and home. The activities were warmly received, and there are hopes to continue the pilot by the teachers themselves!
